Where Do I Begin With God? First Steps in Faith
Maybe you’ve felt it lately — a tug in your heart, a whisper you can’t shake. You’re curious about God, but you’re not sure where to begin with God or how to start a relationship with Him.
“Do I need to clean up my life first?”
“Would God even want someone like me?”
“Is this only for people who grew up in church?”
Here’s the good news: God wants to be in relationship with all of us. No matter who you are, where you come from, what your background is, or what you’ve done — He’s already made provision for it in Jesus. Scripture says,
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
Beginning with God is not about religion or performance. It’s about stepping into a relationship He has already opened to you through Jesus Christ.
First Steps With God: Believing in Jesus as Lord
Every journey with God begins with Jesus. He is the way to the Father. Jesus said,
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)
This is the very heart of beginning with God — trusting Jesus.
Here’s what that means:
Humanity was separated from God by sin — our tendency to choose our own way instead of His.
Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross in our place, and rose again, conquering sin and death.
Trusting in Him restores us into right fellowship with God.
But let’s clear up a common misunderstanding: beginning with God is not about repeating a set of words as if they were a magic formula. Many people have thought, “If I just say the sinner’s prayer, I’m saved.” But Scripture tells us something deeper:
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
Notice the order — it begins with believing in your heart. Real salvation happens when the Spirit draws you (John 6:44), when you encounter Jesus in a way that changes you from the inside out. You may not always have a mind-blowing moment, but you will know He is real because something in your spirit awakens.
From that encounter, confession naturally follows — your mouth declares what your heart already knows.
How to Start a Relationship With God When He Draws You
If you sense something stirring inside as you read this — a tug you can’t explain, a deep knowing that Jesus is real — that’s not your imagination. Scripture says,
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws them.” (John 6:44)
This is what salvation really is: not repeating the “right” words, but responding to an encounter. This is how most people describe their first steps with God — not formulas, but encounters. It’s when your heart comes alive to the truth of who Jesus is, and you can’t stay the same. From that place, your mouth naturally confesses what your heart already believes (Romans 10:9).
You might not have fireworks or a dramatic moment — but you will know. Something shifts. Hope awakens. Peace enters. Love becomes real. That is Jesus meeting you.
If you feel Him drawing you now, you can respond in your own words. It might sound something like:
“Jesus, I believe You are real. I believe You died for me and rose again. I surrender my life into Your hands. Fill me with Your Spirit, and teach me how to walk with You from this day forward.”
The words themselves aren’t the power — it’s the faith rising in your heart as you encounter Him. Trust that if He is calling, He will meet you.
Walking With the Holy Spirit Daily
The moment you believe in Jesus, you are not left alone to figure it out. From the very beginning of your faith journey, He promises to guide you. God gives you His Spirit as a gift.
Jesus promised,
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth.” (John 14:16–17)
The Holy Spirit isn’t an idea — He’s God living inside you. He comforts you, teaches you, and guides you in everyday life:
He reminds you of truth when you forget what God has said (John 14:26).
He helps in weakness, even praying for you when you don’t know how to pray (Romans 8:26).
He dwells within you, making you God’s temple (1 Corinthians 3:16).
He brings peace and joy, even in chaos (Romans 14:17).
Think of Him as your personal Guide and Friend. Maybe you’re about to send an angry text, but you feel a nudge to pause — that’s the Spirit. Or you’re reading Scripture and suddenly a verse feels alive — that’s Him teaching you. Or peace comes over you in the middle of stress — that’s Him anchoring you.
This is the gift of beginning with God: you are never alone again.
Surrendering to God Daily: Choosing Trust Over Control
God has given each of us free will — the freedom to choose. Love only means something if it’s chosen. Beginning with God means willingly offering that freedom back to Him, trusting that His way is better than our own. Surrendering to God daily is what shapes your walk with God into a lifestyle.
Proverbs 3:5–6 says:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Surrender doesn’t happen all at once. It’s a daily practice. Think of it like building muscle — you learn to trust God with small things, and over time it becomes natural to trust Him with greater things.
What does daily surrender look like?
Choosing prayer before panic.
Asking God for direction before rushing into a decision.
Laying down your own opinion when Scripture shows you a better way.
Surrender is not losing freedom — it’s gaining peace, direction, and the assurance that God Himself is leading your steps.
Beginning With God Means Growth Through Yielding
Here’s where the rubber meets the road: the more we yield, the more we grow. Growth doesn’t come from trying harder but from letting God’s Spirit shape us day by day.
Jesus said,
“Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.” (John 15:4)
Yielding is what turns belief into transformation. This is how your relationship with God deepens and how you experience encountering Jesus personally day by day. It looks like:
Pausing before speaking harshly and asking the Spirit for words of love.
Replacing worry with prayer: “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
Allowing God to slow you down instead of running on your own timeline.
Paul describes it like this:
“Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.” (Philippians 2:12–13)
That’s the paradox: you offer your surrender, and He provides the strength. Every time you yield, His nature grows in you — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).
How to Walk With God Daily and Stay Connected
Beginning with God is just the start — now comes the joy of walking with the Holy Spirit daily. Like any relationship, it grows through time together. You don’t need to master everything at once — just start where you are and let it build.
Here are some simple ways to nurture your walk with Him:
Prayer — Talk to God honestly about your life, your questions, and your needs. Prayer isn’t about fancy words; it’s conversation with your Father.
Meditating on His Word — Open the Bible, even a few verses a day, and ask, “Holy Spirit, what are You showing me here?” His Word is living and will speak to your heart.
Worship — Sing, journal, or simply thank Him for who He is. Worship shifts your focus from yourself to His presence.
Fellowship — Walk with others who are also following Jesus. Encouragement, accountability, and shared stories of faith help you stay strong.
The early church modeled this rhythm:
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” (Acts 2:42)
Don’t think of these as “rules” — think of them as ways to stay connected. The more you give God space in your daily life, the more you’ll recognize His voice, feel His presence, and grow in His ways.
🟢 A Declaration for You
Jesus is my Lord and Savior.
I believe in His finished work on the cross.
I receive the Holy Spirit, my Helper and Guide.
I choose to trust and surrender daily, not leaning on my own understanding.
I am beginning with God today — and I will grow as I yield to Him.
Reflect & Activate
Reflect: Where have I tried to start with God on my own terms instead of through Jesus?
Ask: “Holy Spirit, what step are You inviting me to take today?”
Activate: Take one simple action — pray honestly, read a passage from John, worship with a song, or connect with another believer. Each small step deepens your walk.
